If a distinction is to be made with fortune-telling, divination has a formal or ritual and often social character, usually in a religious context; while fortune-telling is a more everyday practice for personal purposes.

The art of using magical tools and symbols to gather information from the Collective Unconscious on the nature of people, places, things, and events in the past, present or future.

Deliberate pursuit of knowing the future or the discovery of things that are hidden by various practices. Some of the most common are: dowsing, astrology, numerology, palmistry, crystal gazing and various cards used for divination such as the Tarot.
